Pen and Ink sketching, I believe is my favorite mode of art.  It takes doodling to a higher level, yet it is still fun.  I love the dip pen, specifically the crowquill.  They are easily damaged and it takes great care to get through a couple of drawings without ruining the delicate tip of the pen.  But its well worth the results it gives.  Paul Brown and Frederick Remington are a couple of my favorite pen and ink masters.  They were both not of this generation but their work remains lively and full of life.  Paul Brown was an illustrator in the days of the illustrator, one really had to know how to draw.  He illustrated many books and rendered horses in pen and ink in a most beautiful style.  Frederick Remington, the artist of the west, was known for his paintings, but do check out his pen and ink sketches, often interplayed with  beautiful watercolor washes.  He gave great reality and authenticity to his work and portrayed the west accurately.
